Dateierweiterung 3G2 wird von 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2-Standard-Dateien. Diese Dateien enthalten Audio-Video-Daten, die codiert durch eine modifizierte Version des MPEG-4 Teil 14 Container-Format. Änderungen wurden zur Vereinfachung der Form zum Zweck der optimalen Übertragung von Multimedia-Daten über 3G-Mobilfunknetze. 3G2-Dateien sind besonders für CDMA-basierten Netzwerken. .3 Gp-Dateien uns ähnliche Container-Format, außer dass es sich optimal für den GSM-basierten Netzwerken. 3G2-Dateien verwenden H.263 oder MPEG-4-Algorithmen für die Video-Kompression und AAC oder AMR zum Komprimieren von Audio-Streams.
Die meisten modernen Telefon-Support mindestens die Wiedergabe von 3G2-Dateien und viele unterstützen sie die Aufnahme. Es gibt viele Programme, die Wiedergabe dieser Dateien auf dem PC, einschließlich, jedoch nicht beschränkt auf: MPlayer, VLC Media Player, QuickTime, Media Player Classic etc.
